Where the mighty Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, Lewis and Clark ended their westward journey in the fall of 1805. On the South side of the Columbia River they built a fort called Fort Clatsop to spend the winter in, before returning to the East in 1806. On April 12, 1811, John Jacob Aster established Fort Astoria. Astoria was the first city west of the Rockies. Above Astoria the Aster Column offers a commanding view of the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean to the West. Movies like, The Goonies, Kindergarten Cop, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III, Short Circuit, Come See the Paradise, and Free Willy I and II, were made in Astoria. At Seaside, Oregon the first resort city on the west coast, Lewis and Clark turned sea water into salt for there journey home. Tour starts about 8:00 AM and takes most of the day, the replica of Fort Clatsop accidentally caught fire in 2005 and burned down. It has been rebuilt again for all to see, and is closer to the original fort.
