The best time to go whale watching is during the winter months of December through February and in the spring months of March through May. This summer's whale watch weeks will be Monday, August 29 through September 5th. The weather on the Oregon coast can be quite unpredictable, layered clothing and or a rain coat is suggested. Snow, freezing rain, or cloudy conditions, also high winds and ocean condition could cancel this whale watching tour. Whales can be seen from the shore if you know were to go. The Oregon coast has a front-row seat for one of the most spectacular events of the natural world, the migration of the pacific gray whales. Each year thousands of these gentle giants make a roughly 10,000-mile round-trip south from Alaska to Baja California in the Pacific Ocean, where they mate and give birth before returning north. At the peak of the winter and spring migrations, Gray whales can be seen year-round off Oregon, but November and December bring the first whales migrating south. On the journey north in spring, mothers and calves on usually pass Oregon and Washington from late April through June, several weeks after the males and juvenile females without babies. The whales give us an opportunity to learn about these giants of the deep. As many as 25-30 whales per hour cruise along the coast during the winter and spring migration, you can usually see columns of water spouting 15 feet high as far as five miles out. The rest of the year Oregon has a population of resident whales that cruise the coast line. Will spend the rest of the day on the Oregon Central Coast shopping and sightseeing in some of our beautiful coastal communities. Tour starts about 8:00 AM and takes most of the day.
